DIY: Set up broken glove box hinge
The right side hinge on my glove box door broke and I didn't want to pay $300 to supplant the entire glove box, so I did a few searches and plant an AZ member who sells hinge repair kits... His name is Fritz and he goes by PCYC. I figured "what the hell" and ordered one.
Fritz fabricated the subclass and I received it only a few days later on. It's a quality part, made of really strong steel. The screw holes were counter sunk, he included the screws and the whole affair was painted matt blackness.
I followed the included instructions and managed to remove the ii hinge pins that held the glove box door, and removed the door. Here'south a shot of my broken swivel:
The bracket Fritz provided fit the curves of the hinge perfectly. I spent some fourth dimension making sure it was lined up properly, drilled 4 1/16" pilot holes for the screws, and installed the subclass. I also put a liberal amount of crazy glue on the break, but information technology actually wasn't necessary.
While I had the door off I removed the piston that is connected to the door. Just unclip the wiring harness, and twist the piston effectually until knob that connects information technology to the glove box lines up merely right and it volition popular off. I tried to move the piston in and out and had to really utilise a lot of strength, clearly this was the reason that the swivel broke in the offset identify. I considered leaving it disconnected, but if I did that the calorie-free wouldn't piece of work. And so, I drilled a minor pigsty in the end of the piston, and dribbled some oil in there. Later on I worked the piston back and forth a few times it started moving easily. The hole isn't very big, I used the same one/16" scrap, and so at that place is nonetheless some negative pressure level that slows the piston's movement a fleck.
Here'south where I drilled the hole:
And here'southward the piston attached back to the glove box, information technology just needs to be rotated back around so the back of the part (with the pigsty) is pointing toward the forepart of the automobile:
When I reinstalled the glove box door I constitute that the swivel bracket was rubbing confronting the part of the glove box that surrounded it, and then I used my dremel to sand but a tiny bit off the front of the surround to make information technology a bit bigger. I didn't take any pics of that, simply it volition be obvious where you need to sand if yous run into the aforementioned problem. Problem solved, so I reinstalled the pins holding the door to the glove box, connected the piston and the wiring harness, and that was information technology.
I can't say enough about the quality of the office that Fritz makes, it was well worth the $25. The bracket is practically invisible from within the car, you have to be looking for it to even meet it, and the repair makes information technology merely like the glove box door was never cleaved. If you lot have a broken hinge on your glove box this is the way to go, just pm PCYC and he will set you lot upwards.

Just stock-still mine with your kit. Cant cheers plenty!! I was well-nigh 12 hours abroad from my appt with the dealer to get it replaced ($435) when I saw this thread.
The hardest part was getting those damn pins out. Nothing some needle-nose pliers and a hammer can't fix though.
Thanks again!

Thanks, Dave and Fritz. The first fourth dimension around I paid the dealer to replace information technology. Now seeing that this is a mutual problem I volition use this remedy should I feel a repeat intermission. The other common hinge that breaks is in the armrest. I guess that at that place are probably some forum notes on this somewhere, too.

Re: Fixed cleaved glove box hinge - writeup due west/pics
i had the same trouble with my glove box, broken hinge. i've read a few threads here and saw somebody got his fixed by dealership at no toll. so i took my machine in, they looked at information technology and they ordered some part they said. they called me when got the role and had it installed. i was surprised to see that the actual part was the hole glove box and the nice part it was no cost, the car however existence under the factory warranty. i tought this would exist helpfull for some of u guys. they cannot really say it'south tear and wear, when they made a bad piston. i call up they should accept recall for that problem. so give it a try and get there showing that u know the problem.

Re: Stock-still cleaved glove box swivel - writeup westward/pics
now practice ane on 'my glove box was too stiff, so I fixed it'
my glovebox was nightmarishly stiff from new. I read a couple of threads and constitute last week that there is a TSB and the dealer will ready the 'too stiff' piston that causes the problem. Chosen the dealer, and told them...service guy came out to check the car and when I click the latch, WHAMMO...no longer strong. Works perfectly.
So strange. Anyhow, mine is cured. No thought how.

Re: Fixed broken glove box hinge - writeup w/pics
oh human being, i retrieve the plastic housing around my pivot is going to crack before i get this pivot out. I can already encounter a crack forming. I've almost chewed the head off completely using vice grips.. Mine is not budging AT ALL.. It's not fifty-fifty moved 1mm.
I'chiliad thinking nigh drilling a hole from the outside, so i can bang information technology out.. It seems the other side has a pigsty and then you lot can blindside it out.

Re: Fixed broken glove box hinge - writeup w/pics
I was having a hell of a time, but a small pair of vice grips worked. Only twisted it a bit back and along and both pins came out. Weird that vice grips arent working for you.
I had to do a trivial bending and what non to get the swivel to fit, and dremeled part of the glovebox surrond, simply it ended up working.
Too had to drill a hole in the piston head and oil it a petty bit, considering that thing was not moving back and forth at all.

Re: Fixed broken glove box hinge - writeup w/pics
Thanks, I finally managed to get the pins out... On i side, there'south a hole so i managed to punch it down with using a pigsty dial and hammer.. On the other side, being that there was no hole, i had no choice but to drill one.. Using vice grips was not working for me.. I even dremmelled out some of the surroundings to get a improve grip. None of which worked. I fifty-fifty virtually broke my nose tip pliers and vice grips from over use of my hammer.. Mine were not coming out.. And then this is for those who have the same problem.. Drill a pigsty and punch it out... Yes i have a small hole now, but it's very depression down and yous'd never notice it unless you were looking..
As for the residue of the job, i'd say it's adequately complicated.. I had problem lining it all up.. The part never really was a snug fit and it took some playing around and in the finish i had to re-install it a 2 or three times to become it all lined up...
But information technology's in now.. i hope it holds with the new subclass? Fourth dimension will tell...

Just ordered a fix information technology kit from Fritz.
2 S4's 3 broken glove boxes. The first 2 were under warrantee. In spite fo carbon cobweb trim curling off, broken glove boxes, leaky valve covers, and some disappearing oil, this S4 is still my virtually favorite car to bulldoze in my 40+ years of owning a lot of different rides. Really.
